Built-Up & Modified Bitumen Roof Systems

Built Up (BUR)
Roof Systems

A Classic But Effective Approach
To A Roofing Solution

WHAT IS A BUR ROOF SYSTEM?

Built up roof membranes, referred to by the acronym BUR, have been in use in the U.S. for more than 100 years. These roof systems are commonly referred to as "tar and gravel" roofs. BUR systems generally are composed of alternating layers of bitumen and reinforcing fabrics that create a finished membrane. Built-up membrane installation for commercial roofing systems can either be hot applied or cold applied using modified asphalt.

TYPES OF BUR ROOF SYSTEMS

BUR roof systems come in two basic types, asphalt and coal tar, and three basic components: the waterproofing component, the reinforcing component, and the surfacing component which is used to protect the other components from the elements.

WHAT IS A MODIFIED BITUMEN SYSTEM?

Polymer-modified roof membranes are composed of reinforcing fabrics that serve as carriers for the hot polymer-modified bitumen as it is manufactured into a roll material. MB roof system membranes are composed of multiple layers, much like BUR membranes. MB roof systems typically are installed as a two-ply system and almost always are fully adhered.

TYPES OF MB ROOF SYSTEMS

The two general types of polymer modified bitumen membrane systems are Atactic Polypropylene (APP) and styrene butadiene styrene (SBS). Each of these polymer-modified membranes differ in their chemical characteristics. Both types are heavyweight membranes reinforced with either polyester, fiberglass or a combination of both.
